I'm back!!
To start, I have snowboarded every weekend except for one in January up at Jay this year. I think this is a feat unto itself if you consider how dire the conditions have been. Temps were above average (WAY ABOVE) until the second weekend in January. Still I got 9 days of riding in before January 15th. Really nothing to report about conditions or good riding days, except for Dec. 28, the Thursday before New Years. The resort got about 6-10 inches of fresh that day and I cut the ropes all day long. Found some great stuff but there was virtually no base prior to this so I had to be careful. Found great stuff on Green mountain boys and Racer. Even hit up North Glade and Beaver Pond later in the weekend.
I want to thank Matt, Jason, Lindsay, Leah, and the Vominator, for coming up over the New Year's weekend. I had a great time and I hope you did, too. Hopefully next time Matt and Jason will be able to get on the mountain.
Things started improving weatherwise halfway through the month. I ended up skipping the weekend of Jan 6/7, but have gone up every weekend since, and enjoyed 8 days of riding since then.
Jan 13/14 - don't remember. If anybody that was up that weekend (Callin, Raisin, PowderHawk, E, Jess and Jess, Snickers, and, uh, Matt?), please let me know how it was by posting in the comments.
Jan 20/21 - COLD. COLD COLD COLD. Prolly 0 degrees at the base and -5 at the top. With the wind blowing. Several of us got minor frostbite on our faces. But this seems to be the weekend that the conditions started improving. We stayed out in the cold a little longer than usual because of the swell conditions.
Jan 27/28 - Conditions were once again good. Actually, they were better than we were expecting and warmer. We thought it was going to be worse on Saturday morn, so we made plans to go to Montreal for dinner and drinks. We went up there with no idea where to go so we just went into one of the hotels and got their recommendation. They gave us this place (which seemed like an upscale greek diner) and another bistro down the street. Because it was 6 degrees out and this was the first place we came upon, the greek diner was our choice. The food was only ok as well as the atmosphere. The other location that was referenced was much nicer and more "bistro"-like. But we didn't find that out until after we ate. After dining, we ended up in a Irish pub that wouldn't have been out of place in midtown manhattan or boston. So I travelled to another country and ended up eating at a greek diner and drinking at an irish pub.
Feb 2/3 - OK, finally a weekend that I vividly recall (since it was only a few days ago). Best days of the year so far. Jay received 7-10" through Friday and Sat Morn. But getting to Jay Friday night SUUUUCKED. Took forever. I left Cambridge at 6:30 and didn't arrive at the ski house until 1:30am. Granted that includes an hr for a sitdown dinner, but still. We had snow the entire way. And slowpoke Randy was driving. Which didn't help the cause.
But it was well worth it as we got tons of powder runs Saturday morning between 8:30 and 10:30. Timbuk was by far had the best snow and we stuck mainly to the Jet runs on Saturday. I personnally enjoyed the Island trees between Haynes/UN/HotShot, and also Kitz. Then we spreadout a bit more on sunday after the most obvious spots got skiied off. Big Air and I ventured into the Orchards as well as doing a full blown Dip run. There's definitely still some surprises under the snow (took Eric out with a Knee), so we had to be careful, especially as we approached the road. Solid, Solid weekend.
I'll be sure to update early next week about this weekend's days.
Music I'm currently listening to:
Deerhoof (just downloaded today. Interesting most people won't like it)
Beastie Boys - Seven Day Weekend and Beastiality II bootlegs, Shadrach single and Licensed to Ill
Midlake - I think this was my favorite album of 2006
Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
Jawbox - Jawbox (re-issue)
Joanna Newsom
Explosions in the Sky - All of a sudden... album and remix (leaked pre-release)
