March '07. Awesome. That's it. and since it was 5 months ago, that's really all I remember.
March started with me feeling a bit depressed, because the week after getting back to Boston after the out west trip I felt super anxious to get back to Jay peak. Initially another trip north was going to be delayed more than a week because I had planned on attending the Pogues show on Saturday, March 10th with Chaz, Rook, and Jenn (coming up from NY to attend the show). But I said f' this and decided to skip work on Friday (again!) and do a one and done day up at Jay. So, that's what I did.
BTW, I should mention that I had 4 consecutive Fridays off in a row between mid Feb and mid March. Classic. I think during the winter I should just commit to 4 day work weeks and spend three days snowboarding. That would be much easier on my constitution. Let's get this done.
Friday, March 9th was another awesome day. Good temps and great conditions since it had snowed a bunch during the week. I rode with Randy and we met up with some other people. Did the Dip early in the morn before it was cut up too much. I think we did Dip runs all morning or something. Then left Saturday morn to get back to Boston for the Boys from County Hell.
The Pogues concert was even better than last year for several reasons 1) Didn't drink as much. 2) It was at the Avalon instead of the Orpheum (much better venue for live shows). 3) Rookie was there. I'm not sure if they performed any better, but Shane McGowan did seem to be stronger vocally. So theres that. Definitely a great show. Reports from Jay for the rest of the weekend were that the weather became warm on Saturday then iced over on Sunday. Randy reported that Friday was the best day. So I didn't miss much by leaving early. Which I'm happy about.
The next weekend March 17th and March 17th. Saturday, March 17th was probably in the top three days of the year. In my calender, I wrote down "Hero Snow". Hero snow is when the the powder is soft and the base so deep that you're willing to go a bit faster and a a bit bigger because there's enough snow to stop you in those "hairy" situations. Sometimes it can be a bit too dangerous, as you do end up getting a bit out of control (well, at least I end up getting a bit out of control). Just take a look at the pics on Jay Peak's site. It was that good.
On this day, I vividly remember the Weids run. I don't remember how many times we hit this area, but I remember getting plenty of fresh stashes. Just a sick amount of snow in there. This area definitely is one of the last spots that gets filled in because it's not thinned out as much as some other areas. There are a lot of downed trees and brush that need to get covered before the good lines are accessible. But this was the weekend that these lines were finally filled in and it was possible to get real aggressive.
One of my most memorable runs of the season was in a creek bed in the Weids on this weekend. Towards the bottom I rode one of the creek beds like a wave or a halfpipe; riding the walls and popping out to jump over a bush or to avoid a rock. And wahooing the entire way down. I was even laughing....like an "I can't believe how incredible this run is..." type of laugh.Yeah, I had a good day. And a great weekend. Super Deep Pow on St. Paddy's day? You can't beat that.
Sunday, March 24th and 25th....Precursor to Beach Party Weekend. We could have had the beach party on this weekend. The weather was warm, the base was deep, and the sky was bluebird. Chillin' on the deck and in the parking lot. Good weekend.
March 31st - Beach Party weekend. Good times had by all. Set up camp right in front of the Bonnie chair (as usually). Brought the CarBombSki - Became a crowd favorite. Weather was perfect. Temps in the 40s and blue bird skies. The snow had definitely started to melt since the previous week but the entire mountain was STILL 100% open. Even the face glades were accessible at this point. But we usually don't concentrate too much on the skiing/riding on this weekend. It's more about the tailgating. Though I do believe we did at least one Dip run on this day. We ended up chilling on the mountain pretty late. Probably until 5 or 6 pm.
April 1st - the Sunday after Beach party. This is always a tough day to make it out. Usually the house is slothly on this day due to the festivities of the day (and night) before. But I didn't want to sit around all day watching some dumb movie on TBS from 1982 (actually, it's usually a good comedy like Funny Farm or Uncle Buck, so it's not that bad). So I headed to the mountain with my iPod and nobody else. Unfortunately, only one of us made it back. While getting my stuff together at the bottom of the Jet chair, I think my ipod slipped out of my jacket while loading onto the lift. You would think I would notice the music stopped. But at this point, the lift motor and me being a bit groggy caused me not to notice until I was up the lift a bit.
I looked around when I got to the bottom but it was nowhere to be seen. Obviously, the liftees had no clue (they looked like they had a rough night, but maybe they always look like that). So, somebody got a free 3rd generation 10gig iPod this day. It was a bit sad, because that ipod had lasted a long time and didn't leave my side too often. It was like my pet. I even gave it a name..."Rover." Rover would play me a tune whenever I was down. He always had something that would change my mood. Sometimes he would misread my mood and play Frank Sinatra when I was eager to hear NOFX, but I would forgive him the next time Drive Like Jehu came on.
"It's ok, Rover, you'll get it right next time...."

On the first day of March it was raining
It was raining worse than anything that I have ever seen
Stay on the other side of the road
'Cause you can never tell
We've a thirst like a gang of devils
We're the boys from the county hell
And it's lend me ten pounds, I'll buy you a drink
And mother wake me early in the morning
And mother wake me early in the morning
