Trail Report for Jay December 1st and 2nd.
After some early morning car troubles due to the early December cold weather (5 degrees!), I got to the hill at about 9:30am. First run done was Timbuk. I didn't even waste time with the trails. There was plenty of base. It's amazing how good shape the Jay Peak is already in. Theres already a solid, though, not deep base in the trees. After the huge week of snow they are getting right now I think it'll be much better. But seriously, the base is as good now on December 1st as it was in late January last year. And probably better because the ground is definitely more frozen.
For the first run, I was a bit rusty. So it wasn't the most enjoyable run. Also, timbuk had already been beat up a bit. So I met up with the some other skiers and we decided to hike over to powerline for our second run, because the entire main side of the mountain was closed so we were sure to get some fresh pow over there. Powerline was the shit. Definitely worth the hike. We got lots of clean lines and powder right to the bottom.
At this point, we decided to hike up to the top of the Bonnie for the rest of the day because not many others doing it. The third run was Vertigo. It was money. fresh lines all over the place. It was so good that we decided to do it again for the next run. This time, there was much evidence that there had been some additional traffic.
On Sunday I got up to the mountain a bit early and decided to do a solo hike up to the top of Valhalla. And it was good. Definitely worth the hike. The second hike and run was also Valhalla. And it was just as good as the first. A few previous lines had been crossed but still got many good powder turns. I would say no matter where I rode on both saturday and sunday the powder was abound 6 to 10 inches.
The best run on Sunday was no doubt Deliverance. I think the only time that deliverance is worthy of a run is if you have to hike for it or very early after a snowfall as this is usually the first location (and CanAm) to get poached. But on this weekend, Deliverence definitely won the award for best snow and most untouch lines. Also, lots of little bumps and rocks that allowed us to get some air under our boards.
It was a fun openning weekend. probably the best since I've been going to Jay.
