Saturday January 17 It was super cold on Saturday. Randy and I planned ahead by deciding to hike some of the Big Jay trail from Rt. 242. The plan was to mapped out a path on Randy's handheld GPS so that we would have a "target" the next time we started from the top. We hiked about 1.5 miles in. After looking at the GPS map I notice that we traversed pretty far into the bowl, which is good, because we both figured we would not want to drop any further than that traverse.
We hiked in via snowshoe but we did not have to break any trail luckily. We just had to follow the ski tracks that had previously come down Big Jay.
Sunday January 18th Woke up a bit later than usual due to a great steak dinner festivities from Saturday night. When I woke I looked out the window and it was snowing lightly out. But it was steady and then is good. We had about 2 inches at the house so I suspected that there was probably 4 inches at the mountain, which is about right when we arrived at Jay. The now was just enough to freshen up surfaces and the glades. Randy, Vommie and I rode most of the day together and we pretty much stuck to the Jay chair. Once again it was all about Timbuktu and the Dip. For the first time I can remember this year the Dip was not entirely skied off. For once the more popular spots still had plenty of freshies. And the snow that had fallen was real grippy and had settled really well. I particularly enjoyed riding the last steep pitch of the Dip runs. Although the snow was fresh, it was not scraped off so it was really nice to make deep turns on. I honestly hate it when I don't hit this steep section well. It kind of ruins the entire dip run if I f'up the last section.
Monday January 19th Got to the mountain early because I figured that the groomers would be money in the morning. And we were not disappointed. Hit up the Upper Goat to WGG right away. Which was in great shape. Unfortunately, We actually had some traffic on this trail which kind of sucked. I usually like to lay out my carves on the WGG section. But with the other people on the trail I wasn't able to make my care free turns. Lame.
We also hit up Goat > Green Mountain Boys > Racer. This was the first time I hit this trail sequence this year. I really just wanted to point it down Racer, which had only a few tracks on it. Although I mostly enjoy the trees, there's still a part of me that just likes to book it down some steep trails. Racer is a perfect trail for this because it levels out at the bottom and you don't have to worry about too many people merging, especially on a day like this day when nobody was on the mountain.
Vommie and I basically stayed on the Freezer for most of the day, so we also hit up North Glade a couple times and Beaver Pond once. But in all honestly, we were pretty worn out. I was fatigued from the hike on Saturday as well as pushing it a bit on Sunday. So Vommie called it quits around 12:30 and I gave up around 2:30 (with several breaks). I definitely struggled down Northwest passage glades and Beyond Beaver. It was time to call it quits for this weekend.
The snow was really good even on monday and I'm hoping that it stays that way at least until Saturday this week but Jay (or anywhere in VT) has not had a significant snow fall since last Sunday, so it may be a brutal weekend for conditions. Let's all pray to Ullr to change the weather pattern soon!
