Thursday January 8 Came up midday Wednesday to beat traffic during a winter storm that was hitting NH and VT. Even with the mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow, the trip still only took 4.5 hrs. People who think Jay is so far away have no idea.
The forecast for Thursday was 12-20 inches. I can honestly say that that probably is about the amount the mountain received. Probably closer to 12 inches when I got to the mountain, but it also snowed all day while there. We picked up another 6" during the day.
Awesome day. Top 3 of the year. The snow was light and fluffy.
Best run of the day way Dip run #2 (out of 3 we did this day). Also hit Valhalla early in the day. I wasn't warmed up yet, so it was not the bet run. Vertigo was good.
Damn. this was 4 days ago and I can't even remember what runs we did.
Friday January 9th First 3 runs on Vertigo were awesome. Rode with Mike Sagelini, Anthony and John, who were playing hookie from work. Snow was a bit beat up but it was still soft and pushable.
Went home midday. returned around 1:30 and rode for the rest of the day. Did a solo run Beaver Pond and hit a tree on the way out. That was a bad idea. More dip runs with Jeremy and another dude. Totally worth sticking around.
Saturday January 10th - Rode all day. 9-3:30. The snow had gotten packed and was definitely slower due to the drop in temps. We rode with a big crew. Nicki, Eric, Randy, Vommie, and many others throughout the day. A couple dip runs. Randy and I found an untouched gully at the bottom that was killer. Some of the best turns on the dip this year - tight powder turns on a the steeps, the type of turns where your knees are entirely bent and the board is right next to your body. Really awesome. Not much else stands out. Had a fun evening.
Sunday January 11th Did Big Jay for the first time this year. It's not quite ready because there is still a lot of terrain that needs to be covered. I also think we hit it too hard left. We should have headed right and followed the ridge a bit more before dropping. The advantages of this is that it's easier to trek out without a lot of skiing.
It also wasn't a successful Big Jay trek because one of the crew that I was with lost his ski after a tumble. We looked for it for about 20 minutes but we had no idea where he even lost it. So we gave up and he had to "Lane Meyer" the rest of the way. Not Fun. Also, we had to watch him so we weren't able to really kill it.
Other than Big Jay, we did the Dip again and also the out of bounds like of Timbuktu, which was really fun, but I was pretty worn out after 4 days in a row of riding and riding hard every day.
